Built for the location manager and the producer, not the director and the DP. Every frame carries heading and focal length, so it opens cleanly in Artemis. Artemis frames drop straight into a recce.

The workflow today is Camera, Notes and Maps, then a night assembling PDFs. Field Recce puts the whole recce into one structured pass of the site, and it works with no signal.

Full-resolution stills and walk-through video, tagged by aspect with one thumb. Every frame carries heading, position, time and lens, written into the file so they survive anywhere.

LiDAR measure
Gate widths, height limits, corridors and ceilings taken with the phone's LiDAR rather than a tape, or typed in from a tape on any iPhone. Confirm anything a vehicle depends on with a tape.

Walk an interior and the recce comes out with a scaled RoomPlan floor plan: rooms, doors, windows, ceiling heights, with power and load-in pinned on it.

Sound
Ambient samples with reference recordings, plotted on a map as you walk, so the quiet corner is named before the recordist asks for it. The readings rank one spot against another; the phone's microphone is not a calibrated meter.

Power
Mains, supply, distance to tie-in, generator space. A structured checklist with a photograph attached to each answer, so the gaffer sees what you saw.

Vehicle dimensions and turning, parking count, load-in route, unit base, permissions contact, signal per carrier. The questions that stop a job, answered on site.

Gate widths, height limits, corridor runs and turning space, taken with the phone's LiDAR or from a tape and entered on the spot, with the frame attached to each number. Sun position for the shoot date is computed on the phone. The numbers that decide whether the truck gets in travel with the recce, not in a notebook.

Type the measurement, attach the frame it came from. The gaffer and the transport captain see what you saw, with the number on it.

Azimuth, elevation, rise and set for the day you're shooting, over the camera or on the compass chart, with both solstices drawn.

Every measurement lands on the access and power pages of the report, next to its photograph.
LiDAR measure and RoomPlan floor plans need an iPhone Pro with a LiDAR scanner. On any other iPhone the same fields are entered by hand.

Send it as a PDF. A report that opens as a link on any phone, updates as the recce does and carries the producer's decision back to the scout is on the roadmap — it needs the EXT. service behind it, and it is not in this release.

The recce report says whether the job can happen here. The RAMS says how it happens safely. A Risk Assessment and Method Statement, drafted from the recce you have already walked, edited and signed on the phone, and exported as a PDF in the standard UK production risk-assessment format agencies and insurers receive. Drafting and signing are free. Export is paid, per document or through Pro.
- Built from the recce
Access, power, vehicles, weather, sound notes and the nearest A&E feed the hazard rows. Every row shows its source, and any row can be deleted.
- Baseline and library
Twenty-one house hazards every production carries, and a job-specific library on top: traffic holds, picture and tracking vehicles, cast on bikes, SFX rain and wind. Supplier risk assessments attach to the document and are cross-referenced by row.
- Signed on site
Edit the rows and take sign-off on the phone, with signatures captured on the screen. Nothing goes back to a desk to be retyped.
- Exported as PDF
Portrait A4, "Page x of y". A cover, an arrangements page and the hazards table. Choose to rate the rows and the table switches to the scored 5×5 layout.
Field Recce assists with drafting and formatting a risk assessment. It does not carry out the assessment and does not confirm compliance with any regulation, policy or insurance condition. The persons who sign the document are responsible for its adequacy.

Field Recce is made by In Color, a production company in London, working across the UK and globally. The app is free because the places you scout can become listings on EXT., a commission-only UK location library. Listing is always optional, and it is always the owner's decision.
Sending a recce to EXT. from inside the app is planned, once EXT. accounts launch; today you talk to EXT. directly. Capture and the report are free, with no trial period, and the app needs no account at all — nothing you record leaves your phone unless you send it.

Is Field Recce free?
Yes. Capture, the recce report, and RAMS drafting and signing are free and unlimited, with no trial period, and no account is needed to capture a recce. Exporting a RAMS is paid: £39 per document, or £99 a year for Pro with unlimited export. The app needs no account at all.
Does it work without a signal?
Yes. Every capture module works fully offline, and the report is generated on the phone. Nothing needs a connection.
Which iPhones does it run on?
Any iPhone on iOS 17 or later. LiDAR measure and RoomPlan floor plans need an iPhone Pro with a LiDAR scanner, iPhone 12 Pro or later; on any other iPhone the same measurements are entered by hand.
How accurate is the sun path?
Solar position is computed on device with the NOAA algorithm including atmospheric refraction, accurate to within about three minutes of published almanac times.
Who is Field Recce for?
Location managers and scouts first, and the producers who approve their recces. It answers the practical question of whether a job can happen at a location: light, power, access, parking and measurements, captured in one walk-through and bound into a report.
Do I need an account?
No. The app has no account and nothing to sign in to. Everything you record stays on your phone unless you send it yourself, as a report PDF.
When is it on the App Store?
Field Recce is in beta on TestFlight now with a small group of working location managers. The App Store release is planned for autumn 2026. Leave an email on this page to be sent an invite in the next batch.
