How we produce a music video.
A music video starts with the track, the commissioning fee and a release date that will not move. The director’s treatment leads; our job is to make it true for the money. We budget to the fee, not a rate card, and say early where the ambition and the number part company. Pre-production is fast, the shoot is usually a day or two, and post runs through edit, grade and VFX to delivery in the label’s specs — master, verticals and cutdowns.

Where the company started.
Music videos are where In Color’s founder started. Before commercials, Jonny Kight produced promos for Blur (‘Lonesome Street’), John Newman (‘Cheating’), Jessie Ware (‘Tough Love’), King Krule (‘Easy Easy’), Bat for Lashes (‘Laura’), The Saturdays, JLS, Wretch 32 and three videos for Petite Meller — picking up a BRIT along the way. In Color’s first production was one of them: Baby Love, shot in Kenya. We take on a small number of videos a year and the founder produces them: the person who budgets the treatment is the person on set.
London, the coast, and further.
London is home base — crew, kit, studios and the borough permits a city video needs. For coast or country we go to the Jurassic Coast from our Dorset base. For anywhere else we hold the job from London and our production partners run the ground — Groundglass in Cape Town, TrueNorth in Reykjavík, Two Point O in Ljubljana — and we shoot regularly in Greenland and the Faroe Islands. Yes, when the idea needs it. Baby Love for Petite Meller took us to Kenya with a small, mobile unit; for South Africa, Iceland and Slovenia we work with partners on the ground.
Do you work with directors who bring their own treatment?
Yes. Most videos start with the director’s treatment and our job is to produce it faithfully for the money. Directors and reps can bring a commissioned treatment to us; labels can ask us to find the director.
What do you need from us to quote?
The track, the treatment or brief, the commissioning fee, the release date and artist availability. We come back with a budget, a schedule and a commissioner’s questions within a few days.
